Freestone was part of Glengallan Shire Council. However the State Government reviewed boundary lines and recommended amalgamation of Warwick, Allora, Rosenthal and Glengallan Shire Councils.

Despite much objection from local residents and the holding of a referendum the Government legislated that the amalgamation take place on the 1st July 1994. From that day forward the Freestone district was included in the larger Council of the Shire of Warwick.

Members for Freestone and the surrounding area are Aub Warrener and Graham Kirkland.
